A steep turn is a maximum performance turn near the airplane's performance limits (typically 70º bank, pulling 3 Gs).

A given angle of bank in level flight will always produce the same load factor, regardless of airspeed or type of airplane.

When adding angle of attack to create lift, more power is required.

The pilot should avoid fixation during a steep turn.

Bank angle may be used to correct for altitude (although I have found it easier to use pitch to hold the nose on the horizon — don't forget to shove at the course reversal and again when resuming level flight.)

Airman Certification Standards

  • Establish maneuvering airspeed, 50º bank angle, one course reversal
  • Maintain +/- 10 knots airspeed, +/- 10º bank angle
  • Maintain +/- 100 feet altitude and "at least" 50 deg. bank
